How it works

base units = amount × 10^decimals

Worked example

1.5 tokens with 18 decimals is 1,500,000,000,000,000,000 base units, which is what a transfer call actually encodes.

FAQ

How do I find a token's decimals?

On the token's explorer page, under the contract's decimals field. ERC-20s commonly use 18, USDC uses 6, WBTC uses 8.

Why do chains store integers?

Floating point rounding is unacceptable for money. Integers with a known decimal shift give exact arithmetic.
